About the Location: A grand staircase awaits, offering a breathtaking view. This park, once a bustling fur trading post and a starting point for legendary explorers like Lewis and Clark, now serves as a sanctuary for those seeking peace, clarity, and a deeper connection to both history and nature. Fort Belle Fontaine is not just a park; it’s a journey into the past, offering a place for quiet reflection.
During the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery expedition (1804-1806), the group spent their first night on an island across from Cold Water Creek. Two years later, they spent their final night at the fort, which had been established in their absence.
Located at the northern end of Bellefontaine Road, the park shares an entrance with the Missouri Hills Campus of the Missouri Division of Youth Services. Visitors may be asked to stop at the guard house upon arrival, where they will be directed to available parking areas.
